How to install the air conditioner correctly - Rules. Scheme. Instruction.
The external unit of the split system is the heart of the climate equipment . Since this is where the compressor is located, all the necessary boards for supplying, distributing freon, microcircuits - which control the correct, correct operation of the non-inverter and inverter air conditioner . And accordingly, the correct installation of the outdoor unit is very important for the further operation and service life of the equipment.
How to install the outdoor unit of the air conditioner
Consider what is the correct installation of the external unit of the air conditioner . It is important to install the outdoor unit of the system in places (outside of the building) where there is access to the cooling radiator, a direct flow of fresh air. In some cases, the installation of the external unit of the split system is carried out in glazed balconies, then it is important to make sure that there is a window directly opposite the unit through which, during the operation of the equipment, there will be an unhindered, natural air supply.
Otherwise, if there is no circulation and fresh air supply, the outdoor unit of the air conditioner will overheat, since the compressor will not be cooled down properly. Of course, in modern air conditioners, whether inverter or non-inverter air conditioners , they often install temperature sensors that, when the system overheats, give a command to automatically turn off until the temperature drops to an acceptable level, in other words, until the unit cools down. For example, we give a clear case of incorrect installation of the outdoor unit of the air conditioner:
"If the weather is hot outside, for example 30 ° C and above, the air conditioner will work for an average of 5 minutes, and the next 30-40 minutes will cool down in the off state. Worse, if the aforementioned temperature sensor is missing or broken, then the unit will simply , overheat and fail, and repairs will not cost much less than buying a new air conditioner .
Installation of an external air conditioner unit should also provide for further service, which includes refilling freon, cleaning, repairs, if necessary, etc. The master who will carry out the work must have free access to the valves located on the side of the outdoor unit. They are usually under a protective plastic cap. Otherwise, if such access is closed due to improper installation, it will be necessary to contact the services of an industrial climber, which will significantly affect the cost of repairs / maintenance upwards.
Rules for installing an outdoor unit of an air conditioner
It is important to remember and follow the basic rules for installing an external air conditioner unit :
- When installing the outdoor unit, make sure that the wall or partition of the balcony/loggia is strong enough to support the weight of the equipment (10 - 60 kg, depending on the capacity of the system). The wall and the fixing kit (brackets, screws, dowels) must have a double safety margin in terms of strength. Today, more often new buildings are insulated externally with foam or construction wool, etc. The brackets should be attached directly to the wall, and not to the insulation. Exterior walls in new homes are often made of aerated concrete. Such material is well suited as thermal insulation, but it is very fragile and the installation of an external unit on it is not recommended. In such cases, it is necessary to use special damping seals.
- The outdoor unit must be installed strictly horizontally - even small distortions are not allowed. This negatively affects the circulation of freon (refrigerant). It is recommended that the outdoor unit be blown by the wind. The most suitable place for mounting the outdoor unit of a split system is a balcony or a place under a canopy. If the apartment is on the top floor, installation on the roof is allowed, but in this case it is important that the length of the line does not exceed 10–15 m, otherwise there will be a loss of cold in the system.
- It is important to organize the removal of condensate in such a way that it does not fall on passers-by, if only because it is not right when water drips on the head of people passing by.
- The installation of the external unit of the air conditioner should be carried out no closer than 10 cm to the wall, since in hot weather the compressor will not be blown well, which can lead to overheating and equipment failure.
Air conditioner installation diagram. Final instructions for installing the air conditioner
Below, for an illustrative example , the installation diagram of the air conditioner is shown:

And so, summing up, the installation instructions for the outdoor unit of the air conditioner in the main points look something like this:
- we select the installation site in such a way that in the future it would not complicate the service;
- when installing, make sure that the wall can support the weight of the unit;
- observes the recommended distances from the wall, so that there is sufficient ventilation of the compressor;
- proper condensate drainage;
- installation of the outdoor unit is carried out as evenly as possible, for accuracy it is better to use special tools.
In the next article, we will look at how to properly install the indoor unit of the air conditioner. Since a qualified and high-quality installation of an external unit is only half the work.
